And the result is…

I am now in the process of abandoning the  Turnkey 32-bit Ubuntu appliance at VPS.NET.  It’s been crashing daily, despite the upgrade to Jaunty.  VPS.NET has comped me 3 nodes for a month to get a 64-bit virtual going. Unfortunately, the stock LAMP install doesn’t come with things like phpmyadmin, and there is a lot more work to configure the [...]

Upgrade complete…

I had some post-upgrade issues with Apache configurations, but eventually got it worked out. So far, so good… touch wood. Now we just have to see if Jaunty  is stable under Xen….

Upgrading Ubuntu…

As I was typing the title of this post, I almost typed “upbraiding ubuntu” which seems almost Freudianly appropriate at the moment.
My “hardy” VPS.NET turnkey appliance has crashed on a nearly daily basis for the last couple of weeks. I can no longer avoid the inevitable. I must attempt an upgrade to see if this [...]

Xen/Ubuntu32 Stability update

Since my previous post, my new Ubuntu virtual has hung (With the “Cpu Stuck for 11s” message), and had to be restarted twice. Not so badly that it took the hypervisor with it these times, but still…
So I have applied the noapic boot parameter and am crossing my fingers that the damn thing stays stable [...]

Things Turnkey could add to their VPS.NET appliance

Lockup issues aside, I found that working with the LAMP Ubuntu Hardy appliance from Turnkey at VPS.NET very good. However, I believe they left out a few things I would consider key essentials.
It’s a LAMP server. I have yet to configure a website that didn’t need to send mail of some kind. Even if you aren’t going to [...]

The migration saga continues….

I’m trying to figure out now if this is  Xen/Ubuntu issue or just an  Ubuntu issue…
In my professional work environment we use VMWare ESXi in production. We run several virtuals in that environment, including Ubuntu (Hardy) and Centos 5.x.  We run a heavily loaded site that deals with a weekly newsletter which draws hundreds of [...]

Migrating woes…

Well, I bit the bullet this week and started migrating an old community website from Windows NT to Ubuntu.  I took time off work to do this. Some people spend their vacations on a beach, but not me. I spend mine fighting with hardware and software.
I opted for the Turnkey Linux (ubuntu Hardy) appliance for my [...]

Have an Ubuntu LAMP server running in minutes…

I’m working on migrating another website from (*shudder*) Windows NT, to Ubuntu.  Now before you laugh and start making disparaging remarks about why this site is STILL on NT, you should know that few hackers know how to hit NT these days, and other than hardware issues, it’s merrily rolled along for MANY years with [...]
